The Darul Arqam SIA team completed 29 projects, engaged 400 of their peers, 100% of their school community, and collectively served more than 8000 hours in the 2017/2018 school year. But the numbers alone don’t tell the story.
Moved by the effects of Hurricane Harvey on Puerto Rico, the team partnered with the New York Police Department: Muslim Officers Society (NYPD MOS) to host a fundraiser and drive to send much needed funds and supplies to the region.
“Students In Action has brought multiple benefits to us, both as individuals and as a team. At the personal level, it has significantly impacted each member by instilling a sense of responsibility. It has also enhanced each of our abilities to be more organized, to balance educational duties, social life, and being part of a volunteer group. As a team, Students In Action helps us to work together efficiently and it strengthens mutual respect when listening to different opinions and coming to an agreement on various matters. But beyond the skills, Students in Action has shown our team that service is not just about helping the community, but about developing the desire to help. Through SIA, volunteering and community service have become a habit and regular behavior in our daily lives.”
